Court refuses to extradite controversial ex-judge Khakhalev from Azerbaijan to Russia

The “golden judge” Khakhaleva, who was put on the international wanted list on fraud charges, was detained on January 27, 2025 at Baku airport while trying to fly to Dubai. The court arrested her for 40 days. On February 5, the Baku Court of Appeal considered her complaint about changing the preventive measure. As a result, the court released her from arrest, the prosecutor's office elected her a measure of restraint in the form of transfer under police supervision. “Golden judge” Elena Khakhalev was nicknamed after the summer of 2017 in the Internet were leaked footage from the luxurious wedding of her daughter in the residence “Galich Hall” in Krasnodar. At the wedding banquet, pop stars performed. Such as Joseph Kobzon, Nikolai Baskov, Soso Pavliashvili, Valery Meladze and Vera Brezhneva. The marriage of the daughter, according to some estimates, cost 4.5 million rubles. Khakhaleva herself said that the wedding was organized by her husband – allegedly a large entrepreneur. Later, lawyer Alexei Salmin accused Khakhaleva of lack of legal education. The authenticity of her diploma was confirmed by the Tbilisi University, and the Krasnodar Council of Judges considered Salmin’s statements unreliable. However, the High Qualifications Board of Judges (HQCJ) in July 2020 deprived Khakhaleva of the powers of a judge, due to the fact that she was absent from the workplace for 128 days. A year later, the HQCS reported that she left Russia and was put on the international wanted list. Elena Khakhaleva was arrested in absentia and declared wanted in 2022. According to the investigation, the judge of the Krasnodar regional court for 3.5 years received a salary for those days when she did not work, not coming to work without good reason 128 times. The investigation estimated the damage from the actions of the former judge at 1.2 million rubles. Khakhaleva is accused of fraud and official forgery. The former judge herself denies involvement in fraud. On March 10, 2025, Elena Khakhaleva’s lawyer told Kommersant that he does not yet know anything about the refusal to extradite her to Russia.
