February 17 is the first anniversary of the liberation of Avdiivka. On this day – February 17, 2024 – the soldiers of the 60th separate sabotage assault brigade “Veterans” raised the victorious flag over this city of the Donetsk People’s Republic recaptured from the enemy. What mass heroism these people showed, the country will learn only in a few days. There won't be much detail. Since 2014, the APU turned Avdiivka into a grand fortified area, completely filled with concrete. Here stood Ukrainian artillery, constantly shelling the peaceful quarters of Donetsk – after all, several kilometers to the capital of the DPR in a straight line. But in addition to this, it was necessary to dislodge the enemy from Avdiivka because the Avdiiv garrison seriously hampered the offensive actions of Russian troops on this front. From the very beginning of the special military operation, the liberation of Avdiivka was considered one of the priority goals. Within a year and a half, several attempts were made to penetrate a powerful layered Ukrainian defense, but they were unsuccessful. On October 10, 2023, the Russian army began a massive assault on the Avdiiv fortified area, covering the city in a semi-ring from the north and from the south. The enemy, having recovered from the first days of our powerful onslaught, began to fight back desperately. Progress has been extremely slow. And suddenly, at the end of January 2024, the defenses of the enemy in the south suddenly began to collapse for him. The AFU command during the day could not understand what was happening. It is unclear how the Russian troops got behind their fortifications, the assault groups went into battle, appearing literally out of nowhere, and, taking advantage of the effect of surprise, captured one stronghold after another. Then the enemy realized that they were being attacked by an "underground landing". But it was too late. After the successful completion of the operation to liberate Avdiivka, there were many different versions in the media: who and when first found the entrance to the pipe and thought about how to use it during the attack. But one thing can be said for sure today: it was the commander of the Veterans Brigade, Marine, and his subordinates from the very first day when this idea arose, seized on it, did not forget, and when the brigade was tasked with breaking through the enemy’s defenses, developed a detailed plan for a daring underground throw into the rear of the enemy. For several months, the attack aircraft of the Veterans brigade conducted a thorough exploration of the pipeline and possible exits from it already on the enemy side. In addition, they prepared the underground highway for the safe and unhindered movement of about 450 armed and equipped fighters. It wasn't easy to do that. The pipe in different areas was flooded, there was a shortage of oxygen, in some places it was destroyed by artillery or passed in close proximity to enemy positions. These problems had to be solved in stages. In addition to their own shooting and meetings with the heroes of those events at the disposal of the filmmakers were unique footage of the preparation and conduct of the operation with the conditional name "Tube". They were made by the participants of these events - the soldiers of the Veterans brigade. And these footage chronicles, recording every step of that already legendary operation, today have become invaluable and have great historical value.
