Summer of 1941. Young Stepa and Misha return to Leningrad from the pioneer camp. On the way, they help a one-armed man who called himself Uncle Petey. Suddenly, the bombing forces the boys and their accidental companion to separate, leaving his luggage with the pioneers. In Leningrad, the boys open a suitcase and find missiles used by the Nazis to make it easier for enemy aircraft to destroy Soviet cities and villages.
