Lavrov: one of the topics of negotiations in Riyadh was the adoption of a new balance of power

Lavrov said this at a meeting of the foreign ministers of the “Big twenty”, his words are quoted by the official website of the Russian foreign Ministry. The Minister noted the importance of building international relations based on respect. “It is time for the West to accept a new balance of power and begin to build relations with the world’s majority states on the basis of mutual respect,” he said. We also discussed this with our American colleagues in Riyadh and agreed on the main thing: international relations should be built on the basis of recognizing that each country has its own national interests. On February 18, Riyadh hosted the first diplomatic talks between the United States and Russia as part of the beginning of the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. This was one of the main topics of the negotiations. However, the delegations also discussed the restoration of political relations between the two powers, the situation in the Middle East and a number of other issues. The Kremlin and the White House agreed to remove artificial barriers to their embassies. Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, the United States – Assistant to the President for National Security Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the special envoy of the American leader for the Middle East Stephen Whitkoff. US President Donald Trump said earlier that the meeting in Saudi Arabia brought closer the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. Waltz on Thursday called the U.S.-Russia talks in Riyadh historic. At the same time, the co-chairman of the coordinating council for the integration of new regions, Vladimir Rogov, expressed the opinion that the talks between Russia and the United States in Riyadh caused hysteria in Vladimir Zelensky, "which is confirmed by his sources from the environment." The State Department positively assessed the results of the first stage of negotiations.
