📝 Summary

At least 20 young Russian tennis players may go to other countries because of the problem of financing reserves, said the President of the Russian Tennis Federation (FTR) Shamil Tarpishchev.

He noted that there are no competitions in Russia, the leagues do not work, because of this it is impossible to finance reserves. “We have a thousand people playing abroad. <...> There is a danger that athletes may go to other countries, athletes are processed, at least 20 people may leave, Tarpishchev said during a meeting of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports. He called for the situation to be resolved. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) have banned tournaments in Russia under their auspices since 2022. Last year, Elina Avanesyan (45th racket of the world) changed her sports citizenship from Russian to Armenian, as well as Alexander Shevchenko (95th racket of the world): from Russian to Kazakhstan. Tennis World USA portal reported that 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who is currently the first racket of Russia, plans to obtain French citizenship.
