The investigation believes that the young man through the website contacted representatives of the Legion “Freedom of Russia” (banned in Russia terrorist organization), and then followed their instructions. So, in November 2023, police officers met him next to a TV tower in Lakes near Moscow and stopped for a conversation, deciding that Zharkov was distributing drugs. The young man then explained to the police that he was lost. A few days later, Zharkov was detained on the territory of one of the military units of the Moscow region. For penetrating the protected object, an administrative protocol was drawn up on him, but in an interview with police officers, the man said that he had penetrated the unit to perform the task of the APU: he had to destroy an arsenal of artillery shells. During the search of the house Zharkov found 8 bottles of incendiary mixture, as well as a photo of the TV tower and screenshots of maps of the military unit on the computer. Zharkov was charged with treason, participation in a terrorist organization and preparation for sabotage. During the hearing in the Second Western District Military Court, he stated that he did not admit guilt and would not testify. According to the defense, Zharkov spent time in computer games, led an antisocial lifestyle, lost touch with reality. In the games he spoke with representatives of different countries, including Ukraine.
