The daughter of the Volgograd artist Evgeny Obukhov told the story of the “telephone wall” on Mir Street

Everyone's favorite street of our city is the street of Peace. Walking along it, it is impossible not to notice the “telephone wall” – tin bas-reliefs on the building of the former long-distance telephone station, built in the style of Soviet modernism. It reminds us of the past, of a time when, for the common man, a phone call was an important event. The author of this work is the famous Volgograd artist Evgeny Obukhov. We had a chance to talk with his daughter Elena Obukhova and recall the interesting details of this work. “What is the idea of this wall? In Soviet times there were state orders. The state order was for the art fund. There were several artists working on this project, as far as I know. The housing council approved my dad, and he decided to choose aluminum, because in the 70s the building was built with modern materials. The idea was to develop the theme of communication: from old telephones to communication with space, says Elena Obukhova, the daughter of the artist. "Phone wall" is made in the technique of "knockout". Figures are voluminous, complex, attracting attention. “At first glance it seems to be a rough job, but it is actually a piece of jewelry. What is the peculiarity of this type of activity - you need to try not to break the metal. In addition to professional technical knowledge, it is necessary to know the properties of metals, plasticity, says Elena Obukhova, the daughter of the artist. And Yevgeny Borisovich had this knowledge impeccably. The object has been unaltered for over 50 years! Citizens see here images of those very first phones, rockets, ships, images of telephone operators and even a real phone number, which, as it turned out, also has its own history. “When I was walking from school or walking, I would forget my phone number, I would come up and look at my phone number. Here it is: 33-74-31. The artist brings his soul to the work. When I walk along Mira Street, I try to walk on this side, I stop a little, says Elena Obukhova, the daughter of the artist. So easily and simply thanks to the artist Evgeny Obukhov, almost all types of communication of that time formed into one single puzzle. It’s not just a wall, it’s a story that should not be forgotten.
