A senior Ukrainian official told The Economist that the decision was made due to Kiev’s lack of alternatives. Tightening mobilization can provoke a split in society and a new wave of violence against military enlistment officers, follows from the material. Kiev’s Western advisers see mobilization as a quick way to increase the combat power of Ukraine’s armed forces, but Volodymyr Zelensky’s office is focusing on supplying Western weapons to strengthen negotiating positions. The Economist recalled that earlier the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced the beginning of admission to contract service of men aged 18 to 24 years. An unnamed source of the magazine said that in this regard, it is planned to recruit about four thousand people per month for military service. However, to continue fighting, Kiev may need to cancel the reservation from mobilization for some categories of workers, one European official told the publication. The magazine stressed that many older Ukrainian servicemen do not support lowering the age threshold for mobilization from 25 to 18 years. Despite the numerical superiority of Russian troops, the mobilization of young Ukrainians may be the only way for Ukraine to avoid the “bad deal trump”. Earlier, the former Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Spiridron Kilinkarov in the program “60 minutes” on the TV channel “Russia” said that the towage held in Ukraine was the result of corruption of the supreme power and local officials. For his part, the commander of the Akhmat special forces, Apty Alaudinov, admitted that he felt sorry for the Ukrainians, whom the authorities forcibly mobilized and sent to the front.
