Tomsk scientists saved Russian toothpaste

Due to the sanctions, Russian manufacturers of toothpaste and cosmetics were left without an important component – silica gel, which makes the products thick and well-cleaning. Scientists from Tomsk have developed a method for the production of silica gel on the basis of the Institute of Oil Chemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Tomsk State University, the press service of TSU reported.

Russian enterprises have already received batches of domestic silica gel, made using the new technology of Tomsk scientists. Now the demand for silica gel from the cosmetic industry is extremely high, since before the imposition of sanctions, most of it was supplied from abroad, in particular from Germany. Products supplied from China often do not meet the requirements of manufacturers, so now such a domestic product is needed more than ever. Only for silica gel for toothpastes, the request is at least five thousand tons per year, not counting other areas of its application, explains Vladislav Kalashnikov, a graduate student of the Digital Chemistry program of the TSU Faculty of Chemistry, a technologist of the silica gel production scaling project. To start supplying material to enterprises, it was necessary to increase production volumes. First, they developed the technology in the laboratory, and then they switched to more powerful equipment. “Here there were difficulties: it was necessary to properly adjust the heating, mixing and supply of substances, taking into account many factors to maintain high quality,” the report says. As a result, Tomsk scientists released a trial batch of silica gel, which in its characteristics was not inferior to imported analogues. This process for Tomsk took about a year.
