📝 Summary

After six weeks of review, the United States officially shuts down 83% of Agency for International Development (USAID) programs. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

He added that USAID spent tens of billions of dollars under 5,200 contracts on purposes that did not serve the interests of the United States, and in some cases even to the detriment. “After a six-week review, we have officially terminated 83 percent of USAID programs,” he wrote on X. According to Rubio, the management of about a thousand remaining programs of the agency was transferred to the US State Department. He added that these programs must now be implemented more effectively under the authority of the State Department. The Secretary also thanked the Department of Public Administration Efficiency (DOGE), overseen by businessman Elon Musk, for his contribution to the implementation of “overdue historic reform.” US President Donald Trump has appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting head of USAID. In late January, Rubio ordered a 90-day suspension of funding for nearly all foreign aid programs. Elon Musk called USAID a “criminal organization” that “is about to die.”.
