📝 Summary

The main event was the sculptures of Pavel Kamensky.

The Hermitage Days will be held in Volgograd for the first time, and the main event of the educational program will be the opening of the exhibition “Porcelain Russia by sculptor Pavel Kamensky”. Miniature textbook of ethnography in the Museum of Fine Arts has already studied Maria Trofimova. At the turn of the late XIX – early XX centuries, interest in the study of the multinational composition of the Russian Empire greatly increased. Many ethnographic expeditions to the farthest regions of the country. From there, scientists brought photos, costumes, household items. Created by order of Nicholas II, a series of sculptures by Pavel Kamensky became, according to researchers, a “porcelain textbook of ethnography”, which played a modest role in the rapprochement of the peoples of Russia. “In the initial list, about a hundred figures were approved, but only 74 were completed. The series of figures began to be performed in 1907. Then, with the outbreak of the First World War, unfortunately, the series was almost frozen. And then with the revolution, with historical catastrophes, cataclysms of the XX century, the series was no longer renewed, says the curator of the collection of Russian porcelain and ceramics of the XIX – XXI centuries. State Hermitage Museum, curator of the exhibition Ekaterina Khmelnitskaya. Figures in the style of realism did not fit into the general channel of modernity, which prevailed at that time in art. Working on statuettes, Kamensky used a scientific approach: he turned to historical knowledge. He conveyed in porcelain the special features of the appearance of each people of Russia. Initially, the sculptor made a figure of plaster. The model was claimed by ethnographers and anthropologists. Then the work was transferred to porcelain. They painted, covered with glaze and burned. The process of producing one such sculpture could take up to several months. There are 25 figures on display. The peoples of the central regions of Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Far East and the North. Here's a yakut in her wedding suit. On top of it is a fur coat richly decorated with precious stones, corals. Such an outfit was created once and passed from mother to daughter. Another indigenous ethnic group is the Aleuts. Skillful fishermen and hunters were warlike people and slave owners. “The most valuable thing is his headdress, which cost several slaves. It's made of wood. Why is it so valuable? Because there is no tree in those regions. Only those woods that were nailed to the seashore with the current, caught, processed, then completely complex vegetable paints applied the pattern, so it had such a large, high cost, explains the curator of the collection of Russian porcelain and ceramics of the XIX – XXI centuries. State Hermitage Museum, curator of the exhibition Ekaterina Khmelnitskaya. In recent years, the Mashkov Museum has established close ties with the largest collections of the country. In addition to what the Hermitage brought, we still show a large collection of those works that the Hermitage transferred to our city in 1961, and these are great names - this is Rembrandt, Rubens, this is Veronese, this is Shishkin, this is Domier. And all this the audience will see on all three floors of our exhibition hall, - says the director of the Volgograd Museum of Fine Arts named after I. I. Mashkov Varvara Ozerin. Organize and educational program, which, for example, will tell about the Hermitage masterpieces of Western European art XIII – XVIII centuries.
