Theatrical and film director, actor and teacher Mikhail Mokeyev passed away at the age of 73. His death was announced by the press service of the Shchepkin Theatre, noting his contribution to the development of theatrical art. “The sad news came this morning. Mikhail Mokeyev, a man whose name has become an important page in the history of our theater, has left. It was a page of triumph, experimentation and boundless audience love, the statement said. Mokeyev made a significant contribution to the development of the Shchepkin Theatre, especially in the late 1990s. His production of Romeo and Juliet (1997) became a landmark event in the cultural life of Belgorod and was presented at the Chekhov Festival in Moscow. Among his outstanding works are the interpretation of “Thunderstorm” by Alexander Ostrovsky and the plan for the production of “Measure for Measure” by William Shakespeare. As a graduate of the Moscow Art Theatre School (1983), Mokeyev studied with the legendary Oleg Efremov, and then devoted himself to teaching. In 2012, he returned to teaching and worked with the course "Brusnikans", who later founded the theater "Dmitry Brusnikina's Workshop". His play "Demons" was recognized as the best student performance of the year at the festival "Your Chance". Later, he staged Punishment and Crime (2019), and his last work was the play Vassa at the Pokrovka Theater. Mokeyev was also the founder of the Ulysses Theatre and has performed more than 20 productions in Russian and foreign theaters, working in Austria, Great Britain, Ireland and the USA. Among his significant works is the play “Emigrants” based on the play by Slavomir Mrozhek at the Moscow Theatre-Studio “Man”. In addition to theatrical activities, Mokeyev starred in the films "Battalions ask for fire", "Night for reflection", "First" and worked as a director of popular TV series "Tatian Day", "Mother on contract" and "One night of love".
