Exhibition dedicated to the life of Pablo Picasso in Paris takes place in Rome

Paris is the city where the path to fame of many immigrant artists began, including Pablo Picasso. The Bohemian capital of the world is believed to have welcomed the 19-year-old Spaniard with open arms. In fact, a police file was immediately filed on him. Despite having lived in France for more than 70 years, he was never granted citizenship. The authorities considered him unreliable, suspected of having links with anarchists and communists. “He was an unprotected foreigner. He was harassed by the police and rejected by the French Academy of Fine Arts. And this is absolutely relevant: how do the police now look at the immigrant? How do we look at an immigrant? You know, the French police considered him an outcast. But he never complained. He worked, says the curator of the exhibition, author of the book Picasso. The Life of a Foreigner by Annie Cohen-Solal. In this Roman exhibition not only the work of the artist, but also evidence of persecution and surveillance. Annie Cohen Solal, curator of the exhibition and author of a book about Picasso, found his personal file. It grew for the rest of his life, filled every year with transcripts of interrogations, residence permits, photographs, fingerprints, receipts and statements. At the beginning of World War I, France confiscated hundreds of his works. “The French seized the paintings from a German merchant. 800 of Picasso's finest works. So he became a collateral victim of xenophobia. To get out of need, he went to Rome with Jean Cocteau and became a set designer for Diaghilev, says Annie Cohen Solal. For "Russian Seasons" Picasso designed the ballet "Parade", which caused a scandal in 1917. The exhibition presents a pink cubist horse from this performance. When creating the ballet, Picasso collaborated with Eric Satie, Jean Cocteau, Leonid Myasin and even the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. The artist was constantly looking for allies in various areas of art. For example, when Diaghilev supported him, he became a theater artist. When he was supported by the Surrealists, he was a Surrealist. He was forced to become a pragmatist, learned to navigate brilliantly in public trends, adds Annie Cohen Solal. The paradox is that for 70 years of life in Paris, Picasso did not become a citizen of France, but became a world-famous artist, whose work was appreciated on both sides of the Iron Curtain – both in the United States and in the USSR. This exhibition reflects the diversity of his styles, the breadth of his interests and the complexity of his journey.
