Illustrations for works of fiction and fantasy, computer games, costumes for the kabuki theater - all this is the field of activity of the Japanese artist Yoshitaki Amano. An exhibition of his work takes place in Milan. How the individual style of the artist developed, Aliya Sharifullina will tell. Even fans of computer games probably do not know that behind the design of many characters in the Final Fantasy series is a native of a small village in Shizuoka Prefecture – now famous artist Yoshitaka Amano. As a child, in difficult times for himself, he went to fantasy worlds with the help of drawing. The artist's brother worked in a paper factory and brought Amano rolls of paper on which the boy spent hours creating his universes. “Even when I was sick, I crawled out of bed to paint. My parents were fed up with rolls of paper everywhere, but I didn’t care. I couldn’t help but paint, and I still am. I paint more in a day than others in a week, says Yoshitaka Amano. When Amano was 15, he visited an animation studio in Tokyo. He was so impressed with the workflow that right there he sketched some sketches. A few days later, Amano was offered training and work in the studio, where he created many characters, illustrations and logos of video games, vivid animated images in the fantasy genre. I was put in a so-called secret room and told to create characters. You cannot leave until the work is completed. That secret room became my office for years. When I turned 30, I knew I wanted to become an independent artist. It gave me the opportunity to work on anything – science fiction, fantasy, various illustrations, says Yoshitaka Amano. The 137 original works were selected by the curator for this exhibition from Amano’s extensive archive, which has more than 10,000 works stored in three warehouses in Tokyo. The artist does not sell any work that has not been specifically commissioned. Many of his works have not been seen for many years since he created them. Despite the characteristic Japanese style and style, the work of Yoshitaki Amano still can not be classified as an anime. The images of the artist are complex and deeply symbolic. In this exhibition, we present him as a master visionary, whose work feels Western influence – from the Italian Renaissance to Marvel superheroes. Yoshitaki Amano’s work has influenced contemporary perceptions of Asian art in Europe. He illustrated a series of books by Neil Gaiman, painted portraits of many musicians, including, for example, David Bowie. Today, the artist dreams of going on a trip around the world. And record your impressions in a new series of drawings.
