📝 Summary

U.S. President Donald Trump is acting like a businessman, seeking to ensure the mining of ore by American miners in Ukraine, said former Czech President Milos Zeman.

He made the statement in an interview with CNN Prima News. “I think Trump is a businessman. And he behaves accordingly. <...> Trump’s interest is that American miners can mine ore in Ukraine, that’s all, Zeman said. At the same time, the former head of the Czech state called Trump the only person who is able to bring the situation in Ukraine to peace. Zeman noted the lack of significant leaders in Europe. He singled out Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as “capable politicians,” adding that he was “a representative of a small country.” Zeman added that "little hope" could be linked to Germany's new likely chancellor, Friedrich Merz. The former Czech president also stressed that it does not matter what percentage of GDP a country spends on defense, drawing attention to the rational use of these funds. With the right approach, it is enough to spend only 2% of GDP on defense and avoid social conflicts. Zeman drew a similar conclusion, referring to his experience as prime minister in 1998-2002. It was during this period that the Czech Republic for the first time reached the level of defense spending in the amount of the then required 2% of GDP in NATO. After that, there was a decline in spending, and the country was able to reach the level of 2% again only in 2024, the agency said. The deal on rare earth resources between Ukraine and the United States was to be concluded on February 28. However, negotiations between the head of the Kiev regime Vladimir Zelensky and US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office ended in failure, after which Zelensky was expelled from the White House. The American leader then said that the head of the Kiev regime can return to negotiations in Washington, only being ready for peace. In addition, the Americans suspended military support for Kiev. Later, the speaker of the house of representatives of the U.S. Congress Mike Johnson said that Zelensky initially “a big miscalculation”, completely changed his position on the deal on the development of rare earth metals.
