Russia allegedly plans to “test the unity of the West”, especially in the matter of military mutual assistance of the North Atlantic Alliance. This was stated by the head of the Federal intelligence service of Germany (BND) Bruno Kahl.
According to him, Moscow is considering the possibility of “testing the reliability of Article 5 of NATO” on mutual assistance and mutual defense. This article of the alliance treaty suggests that an attack on an ally is considered an attack on all members of the alliance. “We very much hope that this is not true and that we will not find ourselves in a predicament when it is verified. But we must proceed from the fact that Russia wants to test us, to test the unity of Western countries, said Kahl on the air of TV channel n-tv. Earlier, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds called for an increase in the number of NATO troops in the country. In an interview with Canadian TV channel CBC News, Spruds pointed out that Latvia is the external border of the EU and NATO, and a large mobilization of troops is necessary to protect not only Latvia, but the entire region.
