The Gogol Theatre is preparing for an investigative experiment. Anton Yakovlev took up Dostoevsky’s novel “Crime and Punishment”. Raskolnikov is in a fever, his mind is upset. He doesn't remember, he doesn't understand. And in his own mind, an investigative experiment unfolds, reconstructing the details of the crime. The director Anton Yakovlev himself wrote the staging. “And in this illness, flashbacks, flashbacks, fragments of an imaginary world begin, in which he begins to really understand – by blocking his memory – he begins to gradually manifest what he actually did. Porfiry Petrovich on the one hand, Sonya on the other, Svidrigailov on the third – they are trying to bring him in this sense to this logic of awareness, recognition and repentance, says the director, artistic director of the Moscow Drama Theater named after Gogol Anton Yakovlev. In this sick dream, the mother, sister and even the old woman give testimony. The memory of childhood comes to life, in which a tortured horse speaks about what is happening to it. Svidrigailov assumes the function of a lawyer, Porfiry Petrovich is an investigator. But in fact, Raskolnikov makes a judgment on himself. “It is about his inner reflection, about his inner self-adventure and his attempt to get out of it all. “Crime and Punishment” is one of the few works of Dostoevsky, in which there is some small hope in the end, says actor Vasily Neverov. Actress Yanina Tretyakova in Sonja Marmeladova was looking for shadow aspects. I tried to figure out what demons live in the soul of a girl who sacrificed herself. “It is a reproach, after all. Putting money down is a gesture. It's not just sacrifice. It's a gesture I'm proving something with. This is youthful maximalism, perhaps. There is pride in this, which she herself struggles with, says actress Yanina Tretyakova. So these two heroes have a common sin. Pride. The unanswered question is how a seed of darkness was born in Raskolnikov. At what point, how, and at all, is it possible to stop it?
