📝 Summary

The International Council of Football Associations (IFAB) has changed the rules of the game in terms of free kicks and communication between teams and referees.

According to the IFAB website, only team captains will have the right to speak with the referee. The eight-second rule is also introduced. “If the goalkeeper holds the ball for more than eight seconds, the referee sets a corner kick in favor of the opponent,” the IFAB said. Under the new rules, the referee will be able to assign a free kick in case of touching the ball leaving for the throw by a team representative, a substitute, replaced or removed player. The amendments will enter into force on July 1, 2025. Earlier, the head of FIFA Gianni Infantino said that US President Donald Trump did not ask the federation to allow the Russian team to the 2026 World Cup.
