An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 was recorded on March 8 at 9:26 local time (8:26 Moscow time) six kilometers northeast of the city of Spitak. The seismic network of the territorial seismic protection service of Armenia reported that the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, and the intensity of tremors in the epicenter ranged from 6 to 7 points. The earthquake was felt by residents of Lori, Shirak and Tavush regions with a force of 4 to 6 points, and in Kotayk, Gegharkunik and Aragatsotn regions the natural phenomenon was felt from 2 to 4 points. Armenia is in a zone of high seismic activity. The strongest earthquake in decades occurred in Spitak on December 7, 1988. Then the city of Spitak was completely destroyed, and other cities of the republic suffered - Leninakan (now Gyumri), Kirovakan (now Vanadzor) and Stepanavan. In total, 21 cities and 350 villages were damaged, of which 58 were completely destroyed. According to official data, the earthquake killed 25,000 people, 140,000 were injured, and 514,000 were left homeless.
