Romanian police have detained a group of six people, including a 101-year-old retired major general. Law enforcement officers suspect them of involvement in an attempt to organize a coup d’etat, reports the portal Digi24.

Prosecutors said the aim of the “military-type structure” formed in 2023 was to “undermine Romania’s sovereignty and independence through political destabilization.” Among the defendants was 101-year-old former military pilot Radu Teodoro, whom the media called a supporter of Romania’s withdrawal from NATO. He is also said to be in favor of normalizing relations with Russia, China and Iran. According to the publication G4media, the general proposed to create a new state instead of Romania - Getia, dissolve the parties, overthrow the constitutional order and adopt a new constitution, Theodora also expressed support for presidential candidate Kalin Georgescu. According to the Office for Combating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), two members of the group visited Moscow several times. In late February, the Romanian Prosecutor General’s Office indicted presidential candidate Kalin Georgescu on six counts, including “actions against the constitutional order” and the creation of a pro-fascist organization. Georgescu himself said that he will continue to fight for the post of head of the republic.
