Istanbul University cancels diploma of opposition mayor of Istanbul

The decision of the university was made after a request from the Prosecutor General’s Office of Turkey, which earlier demanded to verify the authenticity of the diploma of the capital official. The grounds for the cancellation were violations in transfer from a North Cypriot university, which at that time was not recognized by the Council for Higher Education of the country. Thus, Imamoglu was not allowed to continue his studies in Istanbul and receive a diploma there. “On March 18, 2025, the diplomas and certificates of graduation of 28 graduates, including the defendant in the proceedings (Imamoglu – Ed.) are canceled,” the university said. Imamoglu, who recently ran for president from the opposition Republican People's Party, called the university's decision illegal. “The decision of the executive board of the University of Istanbul is illegal. They have no authority to make such a decision. Only the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Business Management has such powers, the mayor himself believes. I hope that in the near future there will be days when those who made this decision will answer for it before history and justice. “The march of our people, thirsting for justice, law and democracy, will not be stopped,” Imamoglu said. Earlier, the mayor became the only candidate to participate in the presidential elections in the primaries from the opposition Republican People’s Party. Voting will take place in 2028, but the opposition demands a vote. .
