Istanbul opposition mayor detained on suspicion of corruption
According to the Turkish TV channel NTV, an arrest warrant has been issued for the mayor; his house is being searched, after which he will be taken into custody. Protests and rallies are banned in Istanbul until March 23. The investigation into the mayor’s cooperation with terrorists is centered around the issue of agreements between the mayor’s office and the political wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) banned in Turkey. The second investigation concerns allegations of corruption, extortion and bribery. The Turkish channel added that on Tuesday the University of Istanbul made a decision. Diploma of Ekrem Imamoglu after the relevant request of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
