📝 Summary

On Monday, according to the Orthodox calendar, the Cheese Week, or Maslenitsa, began. Christians celebrate the last week before Lent.

Since the time of paganism, Maslenitsa symbolized the wires of winter and the beginning of spring. It was widely celebrated, as it was believed that to abandon the celebration meant to bring trouble. Traditionally, Maslenitsa was ridden on a sleigh from ice mountains, burned fires and treated each other with pancakes. And on the last day of the week, they burned a straw effigy of winter so that it would go away and not come back. With the advent of Christianity, Maslenitsa became part of the preparation for Lent: from today, believers are made to refuse meat food, allowing themselves only fish, oil, milk, eggs and cheese from animal products. Therefore, the week is also called meat and vegetables. On this day, Christians pray for forgiveness from one another and ask God for forgiveness. In Europe and America, the week before fasting is sometimes carnivals – the most famous of them, perhaps, Venetian and Brazilian.
