The Russian expert commented on the report of the American company Colossal Biosciences about the breeding of a woolly mouse. According to Lebedev, there are doubts that the recreated woolly mammoth will be an exact genetic copy of the mammoth. “It would be called a modified elephant,” he said. According to the British journal Nature, a team of scientists worked to find variants of genes that carry furry hair, resistance to cold and additional fat stores. To do this, the researchers studied and compared hereditary materials from the remains of dozens of mammoths. After that, scientists made 8 changes in the genes of rodents. As the mice developed, the coat changed: it became long, shaggy and reddish brown instead of the usual dark gray color. So, woolly mice were an important step towards the goal of creating Asian elephants, the closest living relative of the mammoth. To date, the rodents are only a few months old, and scientists have yet to explore how mutations can affect the long-term health of mice, including their fertility and propensity to develop cancer. While scientists check whether woolly mice tolerate cold better than ordinary rodents, and study the growth of their hair. Earlier, Novosibirsk paleoentomologists completed a large study of ancient insects found in the Altai. Scientists were able not only to find out who inhabited Siberia 12,000 years ago, but also what climate and nature were in the era of mammoths.
