Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to improve developments on the humanization of criminal legislation and its application. The head of state said this on February 20 at a meeting of judges of courts of general jurisdiction, as well as arbitration and military.
According to Putin, the courts considered the cases of about 680,000 citizens, and almost every fifth stopped criminal proceedings. One third of the accused were sentenced to imprisonment, and alternative measures were applied to the remaining 71%. The President noted that the postponement of imprisonment for pregnant women and women with children under 14 years of age, as well as men with children under the same age and who are the only parent, will contribute to humanization. “In addition, they are subject to immediate execution of the court decision on the release of the convicted person due to illness,” Putin said. He drew attention to the importance of identifying and eliminating errors in judicial proceedings in order to improve the quality of justice. He added that the results of the work of appeal and cassation courts of general jurisdiction, as well as similar military instances, demonstrate a high level of legal protection in court proceedings. The President thanked the employees of the courts for their work and dedication, wishing them fruitful work. Earlier, on February 18, the Russian State Duma adopted amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code (CCP), which will limit cases of detention, especially among suspects of non-violent crimes, women with children and people with serious illnesses.
