An Estonian citizen, Maria Simak, and her seriously ill mother applied for Russian citizenship, fearing the threat of criminal prosecution in their country because of their political views.
In an interview with Telegram channel SHOT Simak said that their family moved to Estonia after the Great Patriotic War, where he lived with his great-grandfather, who was a senior lieutenant, participated in the battles near Moscow, for which he was awarded the award. Since April 2023, Maria and her mother have been living in Moscow in an apartment inherited from her father. However, according to the interlocutor of SHOT, attempts to obtain citizenship were unsuccessful. Simak applied for a Russian passport several times, but was refused due to insufficient grounds to satisfy the request. She noted her attachment to Russia and significant achievements in the field of Russian language and literature. Simak added that her mother is disabled in the first group and needs specialized treatment, which she receives in Moscow while waiting for a kidney transplant. To do this, she needs a passport or a residence permit, since without it, Simak’s mother will lose the necessary medical care to Estonia, and both women can be prosecuted for supporting Russia. In mid-February it became known that escaped from the training camp of the Armed forces of Ukraine in the UK, the Kievan reached the Kherson region and received a Russian passport under a simplified procedure.
