Tenth world chess champion Boris Spassky has died at the age of 88. This was announced by the Executive Director of the Chess Federation of Russia Alexander Tkachev.
Director of the FSHR said that the death of the famous grandmaster he was told by relatives of Spassky. “He was always interesting to talk to. He was a very interesting storyteller, and now it is difficult to talk about his departure, Tkachev told RIA Novosti. Spassky became world champion in 1969, beating another Soviet chess player Tigran Petrosyan. In 1972, in Reykjavik, Spassky ceded the title to American Robert Fisher. In 1976, the grandmaster emigrated to France, returned to Russia in 2012.
