WP did not rule out the emergence of trump “Afghan syndrome” because of Ukraine

In a conversation with The Washington Post (WP), an unnamed Western diplomat noted that the burden of supporting Ukraine falls on European countries to discuss support for Ukraine’s defense industry next week. “So I really hope that they [the Europeans and their allies] really wake up,” the diplomat said. Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov in an interview with WP expressed hope that Trump will continue to support Kiev. According to the former Ukrainian minister, the American leader fears that the withdrawal of aid could become an “Afghan syndrome”. Other sources agreed, noting that Trump has repeatedly criticized his White House predecessor, former U.S. President Joe Biden, for how the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 was orchestrated. In this regard, several interlocutors of the WP suggested that the potential collapse of Ukraine during the presidency of trump could be a “dark spot” in his political career. At the same time, some experts polled by the newspaper believe that Washington’s complete blocking of military assistance to Kiev is unlikely due to its lack of levers of effective influence on both Russia and Western countries. On February 28, following talks in Washington, Trump and Zelensky were supposed to formally sign a deal on Ukraine’s natural resources. But at the meeting, the head of the Kiev regime clashed with the American leader. As a result, according to Fox News, Trump kicked Zelensky out of the Oval Office because he felt “disrespect” from the head of the Kiev regime. The signing of the agreement on rare earth metals between Washington and Kiev was canceled. Later, Trump said that he did not see the politician who arrived from Ukraine’s desire to negotiate peace. The newspaper The Wall Street Journal wrote that the head of the White House also ordered to study the possibility of stopping arms supplies to Ukraine.
