Anniversary show "Anna Karenina" was held at the Alexandrinsky Theatre

The anniversary, five-hundredth screening of Boris Eifman’s play Anna Karenina was held on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The famous production is 20 years old. And it becomes completely different, says the artistic director of the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre, People’s Artist of Russia Boris Eifman. A show that grew and changed with the artists. Maria Abashova performed the main part at the premiere show very young. Then to feel the suffering of Anna, the torment of choice she could not. Now the artist is a mother of three children, behind two decades of experience and overcoming. This ballet is one of the most complex in Maria’s repertoire. Almost two hours without leaving the stage. Choreography is at the limit of physical capabilities. At the same time, the dancer must change 12 outfits and go through all stages of an internal disaster. The actress says that every time she looks forward to the tragic outcome. “I can understand Karenina at this moment, when you are tormented by remorse and everything that happens around you. People are not paying enough attention to you. There is no way out of the situation, and this suffering turns into physical pain. Then you see this easy outcome and begin to understand, says Honored Artist of Russia Maria Abashova. In the play there is another hero - the corps deballet. It's the secular public, the gossip, the evil tongues that make the verdict. They're Anna's nightmares. Devil whirlwind, which throws from side to side and alive will not let out of the deadly stream. The apotheosis of the corps deballet celebration is the arrival of the locomotive. Hands are pistons, legs are wheels. Slender lines cut through the scene. For 20 years now, the viewer has been greeting this train, created by an outstanding choreographer. To this day, this interpretation of the classical image seems bold and innovative. The railroad circle closed, fate gave a farewell horn. Only the cause of the tragedy is not a soulless machine, but people with their irrepressible passions. Anna has no choice but to throw herself into the merciless millstones. They will grind everything, the end of suffering.
