📝 Summary

The administration of US President Donald Trump suggested that the Mexican authorities initiate trade restrictions on goods from China to protect their products from American duties.

The corresponding idea of the US Secretary of Commerce Howard Latnick discussed with Mexican Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard at a meeting in Washington on February 20, writes Bloomberg. The talks were also attended by the candidate for the post of US representative in trade negotiations Jamison Greer and the head of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett. “The Trump administration has told Mexican officials that they should impose tariffs on goods from China to avoid the U.S. tariffs that Trump is threatening,” sources familiar with the matter said. The reaction of the representative of Mexico was not specified, but later Ebrard in his account in the social network X noted the beginning of “constructive dialogue” with the American side and announced the joint work from February 24. The interlocutors of the agency said that the meeting ended with an agreement to create a joint working group to discuss trade and tariffs. Mexico has not yet undertaken any obligations regarding duties on Chinese goods. On February 1, Trump signed a decree on increased tariffs on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. Imports from China are subject to tariffs of 10% in addition to those already in effect on Chinese goods entering the United States. The measures came into force on February 4, the introduction of duties on Canadian and Mexican products postponed for a month after Trump’s talks with the authorities of these countries. In response, Beijing said that from February 10 duties will be imposed on American oil, coal and natural gas.
