France, unlike Britain, has a fairly high level of independence from the United States in the issue of nuclear weapons. Paris is not part of the NATO nuclear planning group, so France is able to carry out its own tasks without the support of Washington. “France has a fairly serious nuclear arsenal that it can modernize. Unlike the British, they are doing well with submarines, they have their own missiles, they have a rather unique element of the nuclear triad today in terms of tactical aviation with supersonic cruise missiles in nuclear equipment. Whether they will deploy something throughout Europe is a big question. But in general, they are ready to defend Europe, including with the use of nuclear weapons. So I think in this area the potential is there for the French nuclear umbrella over all of Europe, Stefanovic said. He expressed confidence that France would not give any of the European countries a consultative vote on the use of nuclear weapons. Earlier, Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine, said that President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to use the French nuclear arsenal as a pan-European one could be considered a step towards nuclear escalation.
