For this, the expert continued, it will be necessary to cancel the membership in the bloc of Finland and Sweden. Trump’s willingness to meet Russia may be truly unprecedented. We need to be prepared for this and keep our cool, Lassila said. Helsinki and Stockholm have applied to join NATO after 2022. Finland officially joined the alliance on April 4, 2023, and Sweden on March 7, 2024. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, after Trump’s inauguration on January 20, expressed the opinion that the chances of the two Scandinavian countries joining NATO would be minimal if they submitted applications for membership in 2025. On February 21, the press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that during the negotiations with the United States in Riyadh, Russia did not raise the issue of withdrawing NATO infrastructure from Eastern Europe.
