📝 Summary

Scientists in Kaliningrad found in amber a new species of insect from the family of poraconids. Its age is estimated at 37 million years. This was reported in the press service of the Museum of the World Ocean.

The ancient insect was named after the museum - Prochremylus museumoceanus (museum - museum, and oceanus - ocean). A unique specimen was discovered in amber in the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea coast in the quarry of the village of Yantarny. With the help of a powerful microscope, it was found out that this is a female and its length is 1.5 mm. “The poraconid found in amber belongs to the group of Hymenoptera, to which ants, wasps, bees, and the so-called riders belong,” the report said. This group lays eggs in living insects. They also kill pests. In the funds of the Museum of the World Ocean, the find has been stored since 2021.
