The lion-shield-holders installed at the main entrance to the Kaliningrad Museum of Fine Arts will be returned to their original appearance. The sculptures are made of sandstone, and previously had a light color. This is how they were conceived by the author – German master Emil Hundriser. One of the lions holds a shield with the coat of arms of the merchant union. The second is with the coats of arms of the cities that merged into Koenigsberg. In Soviet times, the sculptures were covered with dark paint. Due to the humid climate, condensate accumulates under it and destroys sandstone. The work on the restoration of lions will be part of the scientific and educational project “On the far frontiers of the Motherland”. Young specialists will work under the guidance of a representative of the Kaliningrad branch of the Union of Restorers of Russia. “They will not be removed; they will be restored on the spot. But how long it will take, it is difficult to say. Now experts have conducted the first studies. There was such a first approach to the projectile, during which samples of the microflora of destructive materials were taken. They will be sent for biochemical analysis, and after that it will be clear by what method they will act, said Alina Belyanina, a spokeswoman for the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of Fine Arts.
