Putin expressed gratitude to Trump for peacekeeping efforts
The conversation was the second official phone call between the leaders since Donald Trump took office for the second time on January 20. The first conversation took place on February 12, when the parties agreed to start negotiations to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In the current conversation, which lasted more than two hours, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict. He stressed the need to address the root causes of the crisis and take into account Russia’s legitimate security interests. It was also noted that Russia supports the idea of mutual refusal to strike on energy infrastructure for 30 days, which should help reduce tensions in the region. In addition, as a gesture of goodwill, Russia will hand over 23 seriously wounded Ukrainian servicemen to Ukraine. Both sides expressed interest in normalizing relations and continuing joint efforts to resolve the conflict.
