The real goal of the United States in Ukraine may be fertile land, rather than rare earth metals, said the former Minister of foreign Affairs of Austria, head of the center G.O.R.K.I. SPbU Karin Kneissl.
The United States is offering Kiev a deal on Ukrainian minerals, reminiscent of the adoption of the Lend-Lease law during World War II, Kneissl said. All U.S. allies, i.e. Britain, France or the Soviet Union, had to pay the U.S. for the weapons, money and fuel the U.S. provided. Trump acts in line with this tradition and believes that Ukrainians should pay, Kneissl said. However, there is another resource that looks more important than oil, coal, lithium. It's land. Ukraine has a very fertile land, which has shown great interest in such large investment houses as BlackRock, as well as Chinese companies. “Food in the broadest sense, from orange juice to grain, has proved to be much more important to many investors, including state funds from Arab countries.” Why? Because they need to feed people, and Ukraine is an attractive object not only in terms of rare earth metals. In my opinion, the issue of agriculture will be much more significant, Kneissl stressed. Ukraine has lost control of major mineral deposits. The lands that came under Russian control contain large reserves of lithium, which is becoming an increasingly popular resource, Kneissl concluded. Former Irish MEP Mick Wallace said Western corporations were stealing land in Ukraine. For her part, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova drew attention to the fact that Ukraine’s use of depleted uranium ammunition supplied by the West leads to radioactive contamination of the land.
