Zakharova: Russia alarmed by escalation of conflict in Syria
The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed concern about the sharp deterioration of the situation in Syria. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the ministry, said that large-scale clashes have been observed in the country, especially in the provinces of Latakia and Tartus, where both Syrian forces and armed groups calling themselves local resistance are involved. Zakharova called on all influential Syrian leaders to do everything possible to immediately end the violence and protect civilians. It noted the importance of maintaining national harmony and respecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of their nationality or religious affiliation, in the current transition period. “We are alarmed by the sharp aggravation of the situation in Syria,” Zakharova said. In addition, the representative of the Foreign Ministry confirmed Russia’s unwavering position in supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. “We hope to cooperate with all states that can influence the situation in the country to normalize the situation,” she added. Zakharova noted her readiness to coordinate efforts with international partners to reduce tensions.
