📝 Summary

The use of Russian assets frozen by the West remains on the agenda of the negotiation process on the Ukrainian settlement. This was announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a press conference.

According to him, Western countries will receive a response from Russia in case of any actions against its assets. “As for our assets, which were stolen primarily by the Europeans, there were no specific conversations about this, but I have no doubt that as part of the settlement, this topic will not disappear anywhere,” he said. On the eve of the publication Politico wrote that France, Germany, Italy and Spain see in the frozen Russian assets advantages of the European Union in the process of negotiations for peace, therefore oppose the transfer of them to Ukraine. The same position is shared by the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Before that, French President Emmanuel Macron at a meeting with his American counterpart Donald Trump said that it is impossible to confiscate the frozen assets of Russia, as it is contrary to international law. It is possible to take dividends from frozen assets, but not the assets themselves. And on February 23, Bloomberg reported that the EU is considering using part of the frozen assets of the Russian Federation to restore Ukraine when the conflict is over.
