The creative meeting with the director Andrei Konchalovsky took place in the Russian Museum as part of the largest exhibition of Vasily Surikov’s works in the last 90 years, dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the artist. Director, screenwriter, People’s Artist of Russia, great-grandson of the famous painter Andrei Konchalovsky talks about time, about the era, about the life and main motives of Surikov’s work, about the personality of the artist, about myths and mysteries around his paintings. “Surikov absorbed, on the one hand, the hardness of the blood of the Siberian Cossacks, who are not afraid of anything, and on the other hand, a deep perception of the painting of geniuses of color from the Renaissance to Cezanne,” says Andrei Konchalovsky about his perception of the painting of the great grandfather, about the beauty, harmony, talent and purpose of art, about family legends and traditions, about the history of the family, about the ancestors of Vasily Surikov – Cossacks, “bulous people” who came with Yermak to conquer Siberia. The director tells about the artist’s first painting experiences, his studies at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, as well as about the “music of color combination” on Vasily Surikov’s canvases.
