"Oscar-2025": a review of films-candidates

Tomorrow early in the morning Moscow time on the Internet you can easily find the broadcast of the ceremony of awarding the film "Oscar". In previous years, Russian viewers showed restrained interest in this broadcast. And if it was ignored at all, then the results of the vote were learned later, in between cases. Domestic filmmakers do not often claim to one of the largest film awards in the world. This year, things have changed. Actor Yura Borisov shocked American film academics with the role of a Russian bouncer in the film "Anora" . What will be the demand in our country for the broadcast of the "Oscar" is still unknown, but the talk about the upcoming "Oscar" is long and quite lively. Tomorrow, by seven in the morning Moscow time, we will already know who makes the best and best films for them, and the News of Culture will immediately tell you about it. And now we will just briefly introduce you to the films-candidates in order of increasing chances. "Substance" Coralie Farge made a kind of sensation at the box office: immediately after the release, the film sold for quotes, it was analyzed by leading film critics. Genetic experiments, the wellness industry, what can you say, the world of cinema itself was criticized here. However, the "Golden Palm" of the Cannes Film Festival does not guarantee the film victory in the category "Best Film" at the Oscars. Still, for this, film academics should have more self-irony. But for the best makeup and hairstyle picture is worth fighting. Evil: A Tale of the Witch of the West is nominated for 10 statuettes. The story of how the wizards from the Land of Oz quarreled, and in our Emerald City, rather delights the viewer. Fancy costumes, staged with a Broadway sweep of musical numbers. However, the tape itself looks completely artificial and too serious for a modern fairy tale. The long first part of the picture makes even the most undemanding viewer miss. The magic of the screen was replaced by computer special effects. Six nominations for Sean Baker’s film Anora – today we all know about this tape, even those who have not seen it. The role of the second plan in it was performed by Yura Borisov, also nominated for a gold statuette. The main male role was also played by our compatriot Mark Eidelstein. The uncomplicated story of an American prostitute who becomes the wife of the son of a Russian oligarch can only be praised for a cascade of comic situations. The laughter in the room never stops for a minute. “Dune: Part Two” by Denis Villeneuve also made the list of nominees in the category “Best Film”. The continuation of one of the most ambitious projects of recent years is traditionally praised for its outstanding visual solution. As a result, the director focused on bright action scenes and the development of relationships among the main characters. Edward Berger's "Conclave" is a discreetly told story about the election of a new Pope. The director meticulously and measuredly savors every detail of the secret procedure. Vatican intrigue, big politics - everything is mixed here. But all the dramatic intensity of emotions destroys the finale, characteristic of farce or comedy in the spirit of Monty Python. Scandalous fame and most of all Oscar nominations in the film by Jacques Odiard “Emilia Perez”. The story of how the head of a drug cartel decided to change sex is told with songs and dances, but absolutely serious and even heartfelt. This pathos at first embarrasses, and then just causes confusion. However, the current agenda has not been canceled, this is the only thing that keeps such a tape in the field of view of critics and American film academics. One of the nominees is Brady Corbet's "Brutalist" about the life of architect Laszlo Toth, who survived the horrors of concentration camps and emigrated with his wife in 1947 to the United States. There is a critique of capitalism and a theme of memory from which neither escape nor escape. The tape is more than three hours long and itself looks like a monumental building: the director plays with storytelling styles, correctly distributes emotional tension. “Brutalist” sometimes fascinates with an unusual visual solution, but above all the story of one person against the background of the events of the twentieth century.
