The black and white film directed by Dani Kuyate “Katanga, the dance of scorpions” won the main prize of the 29th All-African Film and Television Festival (FESPACO), which was held in the capital of Burkina Faso Ouagadougou, reports APAnews. The director transferred the plot of Shakespeare’s Macbeth to African soil: after the assassination attempt, King Pazuknaam appoints his cousin Katanga as commander-in-chief, he turns to the sorcerer to see if he can fulfill his mission. A sorcerer reads in the sand that Katanga will succeed his cousin. Thus begins the universal and merciless history of the struggle for power. Katanga, Dance of Scorpions is about how power can drive you crazy. The mechanisms of power are universal. The main message that we would like to convey is: stand firmly on the ground, because you can lose your head from the possession of power, said Dani Kuyate, who is not the first to address this topic. His words are quoted by the portal Afriquinfos. In total, 17 films by directors from different countries of Africa participated in the competition of feature films. In addition to the statuette “Golden stallion Jenneng” drama Dani Kuyate was awarded four special awards, including the prize of critics. The main prize of the Pan-African Film and Television Festival went to a native of Burkina Faso for the first time in 28 years after the triumph of Gaston Kabore’s family drama Bouud Yam.
