Rahr: NATO will not support Meloni’s idea to apply the fifth article in Ukraine

According to him, this proposal Meloni tried to demonstrate his own importance. Therefore, the heads of the EU countries are trying to occupy this “position” by making such loud statements. “George Meloni does not want to be left behind and marginalized. It does not want to submit to Macron, so it offers collective leadership in the European part of the North Atlantic Alliance on the example of support for Kiev. <...> It is unlikely that anyone will support her idea, being in their right mind, the expert said in a conversation with the Vzglyad newspaper. Rahr added that the fifth article of the NATO Charter, most likely, will not apply to Ukraine, but “there will be a certain determination of the collective intelligence of Europe.” Meloni and other EU leaders “suffer from reality.” They see themselves as stronger than Russia and think they can “conquer” Ukraine. However, the conflict of the Russian Federation with the European Union (EU) without the participation of the United States can turn into an analogue for the EU of the Battle of Waterloo. Article five of the NATO Charter provides for the principle of collective defence. This means that an attack on one of the countries of the bloc is regarded as an attack on the entire alliance. In this case, other NATO members will have to provide assistance to the “affected” state.
