Rosatom plans to start processing spent nuclear fuel in 2026. This was stated in an interview with Rossiya 24 TV channel by Vasily Tinin, Director of State Policy in the Field of RAO, SNF Management and Decommissioning of NRROO GC Rosatom.
Next year, Rosatom will commission a new SNF processing center at the Mining and Chemical Combine in Zheleznogorsk. “This year we are starting to create the future by launching this plant, first in pilot mode, but there are goals, and in the 26th year we were tasked with starting the processing of both hereditary SNF and SNF, I think and expect, which will be developed at existing power plants,” Tinin said. He also noted that on the basis of MCC in Zheleznogorsk, Rosatom is creating a “third-generation radiochemical production”. According to Tininin, there are no analogues of such an enterprise in the world. Radiochemistry has always been our main bread, and we are developing it, and the UDC is the embodiment of this story. The new competencies that have emerged are the fabrication of uranium-plutonium fuel. And I must say, this is the only production now in the world that manufactures uranium-plutonium fuel for fast reactors, said Dmitry Kolupaev, General Director of the Mining and Chemical Combine.
