The school said its new rules were in line with the country's primary and secondary school standards. However, the ministry prohibits corporal punishment. The local education department urged the school to bring its rules into line with the norms, the newspaper writes. In response, the school said it was considered the best in the city because of the high scores that graduates receive on entrance exams. If families do not adopt the new rules, then their children can transfer to other educational institutions, the administration advised. According to the newspaper, the position of the school management was supported by many parents. Local media reported that corporal punishment of pupils is practiced by some Chinese schools, but is officially prohibited. Families themselves often support the practice, believing it to be useful for good discipline as well as for stimulating learning.
