American mercenary Robert Manuel Martinez Wertman, who since 2023 fought on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was sentenced in absentia to 23 years in prison for a terrorist attack in the Kursk region and mercenary activity. This decision was made by the 2nd Western District Military Court in Moscow, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

American mercenary Robert Manuel Martinez Wertman, who since 2023 fought on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was sentenced in absentia to 23 years in prison for a terrorist attack in the Kursk region and mercenary activity. This decision was made by the 2nd Western District Military Court in Moscow, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.
It was established that an American of Mexican origin Wertman in April 2023 joined the ranks of the “International Legion” of the territorial defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to participate in military operations against Russian servicemen for monetary remuneration. On August 6, 2024, he invaded the Kursk region as part of the AFU. There, he carried out armed attacks on settlements, shelled Russian military and law enforcement officers, residential buildings, infrastructure facilities, and intimidated the local population. The foreigner was put on the international wanted list and arrested in absentia. The court sentenced Wertman to 23 years in prison. He will spend the first five years in prison, the rest in a high-security colony. He also confiscated 1.6 million rubles received as a mercenary.
