Whitcoff: Ukraine conflict was not necessarily provoked by Russia

According to him, it is impossible to say that the conflict in Ukraine was provoked by Russia. “The war [in Ukraine] should not have happened. She was provoked. That doesn’t necessarily mean it was provoked by the Russians, Whitcoff explained. He added that statements about Ukraine’s possible membership in the North Atlantic Alliance provoked Russia to retaliate. The Russian authorities considered the eastward expansion of NATO a security threat and decided to put an end to it. Earlier, Stephen Whitkoff said that the draft Istanbul agreements 2022 can become the basis for the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, Russia has made it clear that it is ready to end the Ukrainian conflict, and the negotiations, which resulted in the preparation of the protocol Istanbul agreements, were very “convincing and meaningful”. The talks with Russia, which took place in Saudi Arabia on February 18, were productive and constructive. Whitcoff noted that he is optimistic and shares the opinion of US President Donald Trump about the possibility of achieving progress in the near future.
