Ryabkov: only a ceasefire in Ukraine will lead to the resumption of the conflict

A ceasefire in Ukraine without a long-term settlement will lead to the resumption of the conflict with even more serious consequences, including for Russian-American relations, said Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

📝 Summary

A ceasefire in Ukraine without a long-term settlement will lead to the resumption of the conflict with even more serious consequences, including for Russian-American relations, said Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

He added that the Russian side recorded the desire of American colleagues to move forward on the issue of a ceasefire in Ukraine. But without resolving the root causes of the crisis, this will lead to its imminent resumption and even more serious consequences, including for bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington. Ryabkov said the special military operation was “deeply motivated” because Russia had no other options but to launch it. It is caused, among other things, by the destructive policy of Washington and European capitals in the Eastern European direction. “Accordingly, now without addressing the causes of the conflict – and they are in the expansion of NATO, completely unrestrained, in ignoring the fact that people came to power in Kiev as a result of a coup d’état, and subsequently the Western group rejected the Minsk agreements – this was repeatedly said from our side.” It is necessary to deal with non-expansion of NATO, and to ensure the rights of the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine, which are literally trampled. Without all this long-term solution will not work, Ryabkov said. At the meeting in Riyadh, it was also pointed out that the ceasefire itself is not a solution to the Ukrainian conflict. The meeting from Russia was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) Kirill Dmitriev, from the US side – the presidential assistant for national security Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the US leader’s special envoy for the Middle East Stephen Whitkoff. As a result, Moscow and Washington agreed to resume geopolitical consultations and create negotiating teams.
