Gnatov was appointed to this post on June 24, 2024. He replaced Yuri Sodol, who was actively criticized by Verkhovna Rada deputy Mariana Bezuglaya. In particular, she said that Sodol was “drinking in a restaurant” when Russian troops made a breakthrough near the city of Toretsk. It is known that since 2022, Gnatov served as deputy commander of the troops of the operational command "South", then headed the operational command "East". However, after the liberation of the village of Veliky Novoselka in the DPR, Zelensky removed Gnatov from this post. In Russia, Gnatov was sentenced in absentia to 28 years in prison for crimes committed in 2019.
