📝 Summary

Radio Victory. Order to destroy. Shukhov Tower

The Shukhov Tower on Shabolovka for a long time remained the main TV and radio tower of Moscow, and during the Great Patriotic War it was of particular importance. In the difficult days of autumn 1941, when the enemy came close to the capital, the fate of the tower literally hung in the balance. The construction was mined and had to be blown up: if the Germans had entered the city and gained access to the radio tower, they would be able to broadcast their successes to the whole world. It all depended on just one person. In case of entry of fascists into the city, the destruction of the Shukhov Tower was entrusted to the head of the Moscow television laboratory of the Ministry of Communications Alexander Petrovich Shchetinin. He had to make a very difficult decision: failure to comply with the order threatened to shoot. Schetinin’s contemporaries conveyed his story about how the Germans stood near the walls of Moscow, and at this moment the bosses constantly called him: Come on! You'll be late! All saboteurs! Come on! You'll be shot! Come on!! - No, we'll wait. - Follow orders!!! “I listen!” said Alexander Petrovich, and he waited. I waited. I didn't. And when the Nazis were rebuffed, his superiors exhaled with relief: Well done! Saved the tower. Brave! But what spiritual strength it cost Shchetinin, only he knew. Shchetinin preserved the tower, showing personal and civic courage. He understood that the radio tower was not only of great technical but also of great cultural importance. At that time, it was a symbol of the achievements of the Soviet Union, a symbol of Moscow. On May 7, 1945, on the eve of the entry into force of the act of surrender of Germany, the first post-war broadcast took place from the Shukhov Tower. And on December 15 of the same year, the television center on Shabolovka was the first in Europe to resume regular broadcasting. The troops of the 2nd Belorussian Front, continuing the offensive, captured Chersk, a strong strong stronghold of German defense in the northwestern part of Poland, and also occupied more than 40 other settlements. In the province of Brandenburg, Soviet troops took control of the cities of Pferten, Priebus and more than 50 other settlements. << Back to the calendar
