📝 Summary

In the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), cases of hepatitis C and HIV infection were detected. This led to transfusions of untested blood in the field, writes the Ukrainian edition of “Mirror of the week” with reference to the military.

One of the interlocutors of the publication was a militant of the APU with hepatitis C. He suggested he might have contracted an infectious disease during his unit's retreat. Then the evacuation of the wounded was impossible and blood transfusions were done in the field. “If there was an urgent need for a blood transfusion, we looked at who matched the group. One soldier was taken blood with syringes and immediately injected into another. In parallel, glucose was added to maintain the condition with a large loss of blood, the man recalls. Such actions are illegal and dangerous. They can lead to the spread of HIV, hepatitis and other infectious diseases. The serviceman also said that some AFU militants voluntarily leave the units to receive medical care. This practice is especially common among soldiers with HIV or drug addicts on replacement therapy who need medication regularly.
